Sri Lakshmi-devi’s victory: Hera Panchami celebration (part 2)



There are many kinds of different manas, like lalita-mana— found only in the hearts of Srimati Radhika and Her group.


ananta kṛṣṇera līlā nā yāya varṇana āpane varṇena yadi ‘sahasra-vadana’


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.202)


[“It is not at all possible to describe the unlimited pastimes of Sri Krishna, even though He Himself describes them in His incarnation of Sahasra-vadana, the thousand-mouthed Shesha Naga.”]


śrīvāsa hāsiyā kahe, — śuna, dāmodara āmāra lakṣmīra dekha sampatti vistara


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.203)


[“At this time, Srivasa Thakura smiled and told Svarupa Damodara, “My dear sir, please hear! Just see how opulent my goddess of fortune is!]


Then, a conversation took place between Srivasa Thakura and Svarupa Damodara. Svarupa Damodara asked, “Why did Lakshmi-devi’s maidservants decorate her with very nice and beautiful ornaments to go meet with her beloved? What is the reason?” The reason is because Lakshmi-devi was angry with Krishna. Why? She thought, “Jagannatha Puri has so much opulence. So why is Krishna staying in Vrindavana, where there is no opulence?” 


Here, Srivasa Thakura, is playing the role and taking the side of Lakshmi-devi. So, Srivasa said, “Śuna, dāmodara āmāra lakṣmīra dekha sampatti vistara.” This means that Lakshmi-devi is showing her opulence when she chastises Krishna and His associates in Vrindavana. 


Srivasa Thakura, on the side of Lakshmi-devi, questions, “Why is Krishna staying in Vrindavana? Jagannath Puri is full of opulence. Why has Krishna given up this place of opulence to stay in Vrindavana, a place full of dust? Vrindavana is full of dust, there is no opulence. And they are completely rural, their grammar is basic and they have no sweetness to their language. They do not use sweet or eloquent words. And they also do not have any nice clothing or ornaments. Why has Krishna given up all of the opulences of Dvaraka to go and stay there?” 


vṛndāvanera sampad dekha, — puṣpa-kisalaya giridhātu-śikhipiccha-guñjāphala-maya


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.204)


[“As far as Vrindavana’s opulence is concerned, it consists of a few flowers and twigs, some minerals from the hills, a few peacock feathers and the plant known as gunja.]


Srivasa Thakura, siding with Lakshmi-devi continued, “In Vrindavana there are only a few flowers there. And the flowers are ordinary, without a sweet fragrance. And they have to fetch minerals from stones by rubbing them. They also wear ordinary things like peacock feathers. Any civilised person cannot wear or do these things, only uncivilised people would do these things. This is only done in rural places, where you even find some half-naked. They do not even cover their bodies in a proper way. Their clothing is not good, there are no beautiful dresses, and their clothes are dusty and smell bad. Their bodies also smell bad as they never use soap or shampoo. These are such rural people. And Krishna is staying there? Where gopas and gopis feed cows and fetch cow dung? Such bad smells… And this is good?”


For this reason, our scriptures state:


vṛndāvana dekhibāre gelā jagannātha śuni’ lakṣmī-devīra mane haila āsoyātha


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.205)


[“When Jagannatha decided to see Vrindavana, He went there, and upon hearing this, the goddess of fortune experienced restlessness and jealousy.]


eta sampatti chāḍi’ kene gelā vṛndāvana tāṅre hāsya karite lakṣmī karilā sājana


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.206)


[“She wondered, ‘Why did Lord Jagannatha give up so much opulence and go to Vrindavana?’ To make Him a laughing stock, the goddess of fortune made arrangements for much decoration.]


“tomāra ṭhākura, dekha eta sampatti chāḍi’ patra-phala-phula-lobhe gelā puṣpa-bāḍī


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.207)


[“Then the maidservants of the goddess of fortune said to the servants of Lord Jagannatha, ‘Why did your Lord Jagannatha abandon the great opulence of the goddess of fortune and, for the sake of a few leaves, fruits and flowers, go see the flower garden of Srimati Radharani?]


ei karma kare kāhāṅ vidagdha-śiromaṇi? lakṣmīra agrete nija prabhure deha’ āni’ ”


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.208)


[“Your master is so expert at everything, but why does He do such things? Now bring your master before the goddess of fortune.]


Here, Lakshmi-devi becomes very angry, krodha-abhimana and demands, “O, return my husband.” 


eta bali’ mahā-lakṣmīra saba dāsī-gaṇe kaṭi-vastre bāndhi’ āne prabhura nija-gaṇe


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.209)


[“In this way all the maidservants of the goddess of fortune arrested the servants of Jagannatha, bound them around the waist and brought them before the goddess of fortune.]


lakṣmīra caraṇe āni’ karāya praṇati dhana-daṇḍa laya, āra karāya minati


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.210)


[“When all the maidservants brought Lord Jagannatha’s servants before the lotus feet of the goddess of fortune, the Lord’s servants were fined and forced to submit.]


rathera upare kare daṇḍera tāḍana cora-prāya kare jagannāthera sevaka-gaṇa


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.211)


[“All the maidservants began to beat the Ratha car with sticks, and they treated the servants of Lord Jagannatha almost like thieves.]


All of the servants of Lakhsmi became very angry with the Vrindavanavasis, the servants of Lord Jagannatha, and bound them and brought them to the lotus feet of Lakshmi-devi. They even began hitting His chariot with sticks. 


saba bhṛtya-gaṇa kahe, — yoḍa kari’ hāta ‘kāli āni diba tomāra āge jagannātha’


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.212)


[“Finally all of Lord Jagannatha’s servants submitted to the goddess of fortune with folded hands, assuring her that they would bring Lord Jagannatha before her the very next day.]


Then, all of the associates of Lord Jagannatha said, “Okay do not worry, tomorrow Krishna will come and He will completely surrender to your feet.” 


tabe śānta hañā lakṣmī yāya nija ghara āmāra lakṣmīra sampad — vākya-agocara


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.213)


[“Being thus pacified, the goddess of fortune returned to her apartment. Just see! My goddess of fortune is opulent beyond all description.”]


Srivasa Thakura stated that after the associates of Lord Jagannatha very humbly told Lakshmi-devi, “Okay, tomorrow your husband Krishna will surrender to you. Please keep calm and quiet,” Lakshmi-devi then became somewhat pacified.


Then Srivasa Thakura again said, “Svarupa Damodara, do you know? My Lakshmi’s opulence is unparalleled. Look how beautiful Vaikuntha-dhama is.” 


dugdha āuṭi’ dadhi mathe tomāra gopī-gaṇe āmāra ṭhākurāṇī vaise ratna-siṁhāsane


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.214)


[Srivasa Thakura continued to address Svarupa Damodara, “Your gopis are engaged in boiling milk and churning yoghurt, but my mistress, the goddess of fortune, sits on a throne made of jewels and gems.”]


Srivasa Thakura continued, “You know, my mistress Lakshmi-devi, She is called Maharani in Vaikuntha-dhama. She is the queen of Vaikuntha and she gives orders to all of her servants. And your gopis, what are they doing? They milk their own cows and boil that milk themselves. Why are they doing these things? Why are they milking their own cows? Also, when they boil milk, they have to sit very close to the fire, and their bodies become very hot and sweaty.”


In the mood of Narada Rishi, Srivasa Thakura in this way glorified Lakshmi-devi. 


nārada-prakṛti śrīvāsa kare parihāsa śuni’ hāse mahāprabhura yata nija-dāsa


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.215)


[Srivasa Thakura, who was enjoying the mood of Narada Muni, thus made jokes. Hearing him, all the personal servants of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu began to smile.]


As mentioned, Srivasa’s mood was now as Narada Rishi, and when he began glorifying the associates of Lakshmi-devi in Vaikuntha, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates heard these things and began laughing.


prabhu kahe, — śrīvāsa, tomāte nārada-svabhāva aiśvarya-bhāve tomāte, īśvara-prabhāva


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.216)


[Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu then told Srivasa Thakura, “My dear Srivasa, your nature is exactly like that of Narada Muni. The Supreme Personality of Godhead’s opulence is having a direct influence upon you.]


iṅho dāmodara-svarūpa — śuddha-vrajavāsī aiśvarya nā jāne iṅho śuddha-preme bhāsi’


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.217)


[“Svarupa Damodara is a pure devotee of Vrindavana. He does not even know what opulence is, for he is simply absorbed in pure devotional service.”]


Then Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, “Srivasa, your nature is one of opulence and Svarupa Damodara’s nature is that of a pure Vrajavasi.” Those who are pure Vrajavasis, have no mood of opulence. Even though they have witnessed many acts of opulence displayed by Krishna, they never believe Krishna is Svayam Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.


aiśvarya dekhileha ‘śuddhera’ nahe aiśvarya


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Antya-lila 7.35)


[“Even if a pure devotee sees the opulence of Krishna, he does not accept it. Therefore pure consciousness is more exalted than consciousness of the Lord’s opulence.”]


This is the nature of pure Vrajavasis.


Svarupa Damodara replied:


svarūpa kahe, — śrīvāsa, śuna sāvadhāne vṛndāvana-sampad tomāra nāhi paḍe mane?


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.218)


[Svarupa Damodara then retorted, “My dear Srivasa, please hear me with attention. You have forgotten the transcendental opulence of Vrindavana.]


vṛndāvane sāhajika ye sampat-sindhu dvārakā-vaikuṇṭha-sampat — tāra eka bindu


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.219)


[“The natural opulence of Vrindavana is just like an ocean. The opulence of Dvaraka and Vaikuntha is not even to be compared to a drop.]


Svarupa Damodara answered, “O Srivasa, did you forget about the opulence of Vrindavana? And the spontaneous opulence in Vrindavana, that opulence which you cannot compare one drop of, to the whole of Dvaraka’s and Vaikuntha’s opulence. Just one grain of dust from Vrindavana is so powerful. How have you possibly forgotten this?”


parama puruṣottama svayaṁ bhagavān kṛṣṇa yāhāṅ dhanī tāhāṅ vṛndāvana-dhāma


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.220)


[“Sri Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, full of all opulences, and His complete opulences are exhibited only in Vrindavana-dhama.]


cintāmaṇi-maya bhūmi ratnera bhavana cintāmaṇi-gaṇa dāsī-caraṇa-bhūṣaṇa


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.221)


[“Vrindavana-dhama is made of transcendental touchstone. Its entire surface is the source of all valuable jewels, and the chintamani stone is used to decorate the lotus feet of the maidservants of Vrindavana.]


kalpavṛkṣa-latāra — yāhāṅ sāhajika-vana puṣpa-phala vinā keha nā māge anya dhana


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.222)


[“Vrindavana is a natural forest of desire trees and creepers, and the inhabitants do not want anything but the fruits and flowers of those desire trees.]


ananta kāma-dhenu tāhāṅ phire vane vane dugdha-mātra dena, keha nā māge anya dhane


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.223)


[“In Vrindavana there are cows that fulfil all desires (kama-dhenus), and their number is unlimited. They graze from forest to forest and deliver only milk. The people want nothing else.]


sahaja lokera kathā — yāhāṅ divya-gīta sahaja gamana kare, — yaiche nṛtya-pratīta


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.224)


[“In Vrindavana, the natural speech of the people sounds like music, and their natural motion resembles a dance.]


sarvatra jala — yāhāṅ amṛta-samāna cid-ānanda jyotiḥ svādya — yāhāṅ mūrtimān


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.225)


[“The water in Vrindavana is nectar, and the brahmajyoti effulgence, which is full of transcendental bliss, is directly perceived there in its form.]


lakṣmī jini’ guṇa yāhāṅ lakṣmīra samāja kṛṣṇa-vaṁśī kare yāhāṅ priya-sakhī-kāya


Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 14.226)


[“The gopis there are also goddesses of fortune, and they surpass the goddess of fortune who abides in Vaikuntha. In Vrindavana, Lord Krishna is always playing His transcendental flute, which is His dear companion.”]


Our Sri Brahma-samhita very clearly explains: 


cintāmaṇi-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vṛkṣa lakṣāvṛteṣu surabhīr abhipālayantam lakṣmī-sahasra-śata-sambhrama-sevyamānaṁ govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi 


Sri Brahma-samhita (29)


[The transcendental realm is eternally adorned by millions of wish-fulfilling trees, by pavilions made of desire-fulfilling jewels and by innumerable wish-fulfilling cows. There, thousands upon thousands of Lakshmis, or gopis, are rendering services to the Supreme Personality with great affection. I worship that original Supreme Personality, Sri Govinda.]


śriyaḥ kāntāḥ kāntaḥ parama-puruṣaḥ kalpa-taravo drumā bhūmiś cintāmaṇi-gaṇa-mayī toyam amṛtam kathā gānaṁ nāṭyaṁ gamanam api vaṁśī priya-sakhī cid-ānandaṁ jyotiḥ param api tad āsvādyam api ca 

sa yatra kṣīrābdhiḥ sravati surabhībhyaś ca su-mahān nimeṣārdhākhyo vā vrajati na hi yatrāpi samayaḥ bhaje śvetadvīpaṁ tam aham iha golokam iti yaṁ vidantas te santaḥ kṣiti-virala-cārāḥ katipaye


Sri Brahma-samhita (56)


[I worship that supreme abode of Shvetadvipa, where the beloved heroines are a host of transcendental goddesses of fortune, and the Supreme Personality Sri Krishna is the only lover; where all the trees are spiritual desire-trees, and the earth is made of transcendental wish-fulfilling chintamani jewels; where the water is nectar, natural speaking is a melodious song, and walking to and fro is an artful dance; where the flute is the dearmost friend; where light is full of knowledge and bliss, and the supreme spiritual substance that comprises all things is relishable; where a vast transcendental ocean of milk is always flowing from millions upon millions of surabhi cows; and where time is not subject to passing away, even for half the blink of an eye, because it is not divided into past and future, but remains in the undivided eternal present. That divine abode, which is practically unknown in this world, is known by the name of Goloka to only a few, rare sadhus.]


Svarupa Damodara continued, “O Srivasa Thakura, do you know how beautiful Vrindavana is? All the houses of Vrindavana are made of chintamani stones, and all of the trees of Vrindavana are called kalpa-vriksha, or desire trees. The cows of Vrindavana are known as kama-dhenu— they fulfil all desires. And all of the Lakshmis of Vaikuntha are brooming the dust of Vrindavana. How is it possible that you have forgotten this?”


[Bolo Vrindavana bihari lala ki jaya!]

[Jaya jaya Sri Radhe!]
